DESCRIPTION OF ARTWORK
A surprising encounter between classical art, physical exercise and contemporary culture
Installed in the Volta station, Physical Culture: Metro Edition by Augustas Serapinas is a new version of the Physical Culture series: the series of installations that the artist started in 2012 and presented in various international contexts.
The work brings together fully functional fitness machines and replicas of traditional classical sculptures that, for this new version, were made of aluminum for the first time. Traditional gym weights thus leave room for sculptures, giving rise to an unexpected juxtaposition between training practice and art history.
The result is a dialogue between past and present, between artistic culture and everyday life, which transforms the subway space into a place of encounter and discovery.

With Physical Culture: Metro Edition, Serapinas connects two seemingly distant forms of exercise: body training and artist training. Both require practice, repetition, discipline, and constant commitment. Just as the body is built through training, artistic practice also develops through continuous exercise made of study, experimentation and repetition.

Augustas Serapinas
Between architecture, collective memory, and social space, a poetic and political research that questions the transformations of contemporary territories.
