Emilio IsgròIncancellabile Vittoria

DESCRIPTION OF ARTWORK
the rebirth of the Vittoria Alata
On the occasion of the return of the Winged Victory to Brescia after two years of restoration, the artist created a site-specific work that redraws the silhouette of the ancient masterpiece through the erasures typical of its most characteristic expressive style, which gave rise to one of the most original languages of post-World War II contemporary art.
Incancellabile Vittoria it’s a monumental installation of approximately 200m2, composed of 205 milled fibre cement panels.

The silhouette of the Roman goddess, dotted in red and recognizable by her wings and the raised position of her arms, emerges from a larger grid composed of black erasures on a passage from Virgil’s Aeneid.
Brixia, ancient Brescia, was in fact one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire.

Emilio Isgrò
Erasure as a gesture that does not eliminate but reveals: it transforms silence into word and absence into meaning, making subtraction a political and poetic act.
